The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
